Recently, I heard Dr. Renny McLean make a profound statement about our president that most people will not receive and, likely, do not understand. The statement, paraphrased, was this: “President Obama is our president because it was his time. However, President Obama was strategically placed to drive the Church to its knees; to force us to pray.”
Respect the POTUS
No matter your colour, party, or denomination, God’s Word is yet true regardless of what a president may deem lawful or true. Above everything, our job is to pray for the president as well as the supporting branches of government: executive, legislative, and judicial. President Obama became the president because Americans voted for him. God was not rooting nor worrying when our POTUS (President of the United States) was sworn in. It was a test.
The Apostle Paul made the following statement of governing authorities:
Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves…. For he is God’s minister to you for good…. Therefore you must be subject, not only because of wrath but also for conscience’ sake (Romans 13:1-5).
Respecting and honouring the POTUS does not mean that we must agree with everything they say, do, or legalize. However, it does mean that we respect them enough to pray for them.
Why Should We Pray?
When our president goes on tours to apologize for America and makes Evangelist Billy Graham’s son, Franklin, unwelcome at the White House on the National Day of Prayer because of his godly stance on Islam, we need to pray. When our First Lady is more concerned about regulating school lunches and drink sizes than saving the millions of aborted babies who will never live to eat school lunches or drink oversized drinks, we need to pray. When the war against terror is systematically not referred to as a war against Jihadist terrorists and is fought in the flesh despite the fact that “we wrestle not against flesh and blood,” we absolutely need to pray (Ephesians 6:12).
Something that I’ve noted about our president is that he has always appeared to be open to advice. Like the kings of old, our governmental leaders still need an “oracle from the Lord” to speak on His behalf into their lives. They need the leading and guidance of the Holy Spirit in order to make godly decisions that will shift the balance of our nation from judgment to blessing.
Oh don’t worry: the Church of the Living God will still be blessed amidst recession, inevitable third world conditions, encroaching socialist policies, and natural disasters. However, the nation will continue into a downward spiral of destruction if the Church does not fall to their knees and pray.
In King Solomon’s request for wisdom to appropriately govern the nation, God promised him this:
If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. (II Chronicles 7:14)
This is a seven step process wherein God promises:
Step 1: Humble Yourself
The humility starts with you. Even if our president never becomes a Christian or never repents for his wrong—great or small—you can still choose to humble yourself before the mighty hand of God (I Peter 5:6).
Step 2: Pray
Step 3: Seek God’s Face
God requires a sustained movement of prayer; not a spurt that flows only for a moment or in a time of crisis. Prayer should be our lifestyle (I Thessalonians 5:17).
Step 4: Repent
Take your cue from Daniel: repent first for your personal shortcomings. Then do as Daniel did and repent for the sins of your people and nation. One man—or woman—can change the entire course of a nation (Daniel 9:1-19).
Then God Will:
Step 5: Hear You
Just like God heard Daniel, He will hear you if your prayer is sincere; your petition will be answered (Daniel 9:20-23).
Step 6: Forgive You
Step 7: Heal Your Land
Our Jewish brethren understand that the land, not just a people or a nation, needs healing. Similarly, just as a land can be cursed, it can also be blessed. America needs this healing desperately.
The very earth is crying out for the manifestation of the sons and daughters of the Most High God. Be aware of what the president is supporting and making lawful. But more importantly, be mindful that without some sort of spiritual protection and guidance from his Christian countrymen, he will never succeed at being the president that he could be. Whether re-elected or not, we should cover President Obama and pray that God would place strategic, godly individuals in his life for the betterment of his soul and our nation as a whole. What say ye?
