Autumn Renewal: 5 Ways to Make Your House Ready for Fall

 AutumnRenewal Collage

Can you believe that Autumn is here already? It feels like only a week ago, it was the end of Spring and the start of Summer. Fall is my absolute most favourite time of the year! (Blame it on my November birthday.) If you’re already feeling the Fall vibes in your home, great. But if not, allow me to assist. Here are five ways to make your house ready for Fall!

1) Fragrance.

This is very probably the easiest way to make your home feel like Fall. As I write this, I’ve got an old liquid potpourri pot going downstairs with nothing but water and cinnamon (half a tablespoon) in it. The whole house is full of cinnamon! Some other ways to usher in the smell of the season include:

But before you run off to another website or store, the whole point of buying seasonal fragrances is to be, well, seasonal. Try warm fragrances like:

  • Pumpkin
  • Apple
  • Cinnamon
  • Spice
  • Vanilla

2) Decor.

Time to switch out that wreath on your front door! Switch up or add decor to your front porch. Rotate those centerpieces on your dining room, breakfast nook, and coffee tables. These decor rotations and additions can apply to your office and church as well.

Think:

  • Pumpkins
  • Gourds
  • Corn and cornstalks
  • Autumn leaves
  • Basically, almost Thanksgiving, but not quite.

3) Linens.

If you don’t have a whole lot of linens to switch around, then see #1 with mention of fabric fresheners. However, if you do have items (or money) to play with focus on rotating:

4) Closets.

You can skip this item if you live somewhere the weather never (or hardly) ever changes with the season. But if you live somewhere with four seasons like me (or even three), then time to switch out those Spring/Summer clothes and accessories with the Fall/Winter ones.

If you have more than one closet to utilize, then you can move your out of season items to the more distant closet while keeping your in season items in the closet nearest you. You can also choose to pack away your out of season items instead of or in addition to rotating closet space.

And if you have kids, this is a great way to avoid those Rudy versus Clair Huxtable arguments about what is and is not acceptable for your local Autumn weather!

5) Recipes.

This would, of course, be the yummiest way to shift the season at home. One of the best things about Autumn–besides my birthday, and the colours, and the fashion–is the food! You know you love you some Fall food! Sweet potatoes and yams, spice cakes and coffee cakes, apple pies, hot cocoa and hot cider, and everything pumpkin from soups to muffins to cheesecakes to Starbucks! What’s not to love??

Surprise Drink Discovery: Plain coffee + 1 peppermint candy + International Delight’s White Chocolate Raspberry Creamer = HEAVEN IN A CUP! (It admittedly tastes like Christmas, but if you’re like me, then it’s perfect for Fall as well!)

If you focus on just one thing for shifting to Autumn, you’ll be fine. And that one thing is warmth. Warm colours. Warm fragrances. Warm foods. If you keep that in mind, you’ll be set!
