Wed Collage

If you’re getting married, then chances are you want your wedding to be specific, different from that of your best friend, sister, cousin, co-worker…you get the idea. So how do you make your wedding, well, yours? You personalize. You think outside the box. So with that in mind, here are seven themes to make your wedding fabulously unique.

1) Literature Lovers

book wedding backdrop - say whaaaat? If I ever get a man, and get married, I am having this.

If you’re a book nerd like me, then this theme is totally up your alley. Adore tales of faerie like me? Seek out lovely copies of The Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Anderson, C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, George MacDonald and others to be incorporated into your decor. Dedicate different tables to your favourite African and African-American authors. Relish Russian classics? Find lines from The Brothers Karamazov, The Idiot, Anna Karenina, Metamorphosis, and others to use in fun, short quizzes for your guests at the reception. Use Ken Follett’s Pillars of the Earth to build ceremonial pillars at your wedding or reception venues. There are plenty of ways to implement an intellectual theme like this.

Ideas to Implement It:

  1. A bookish backdrop
  2. Stacked-book centerpieces
  3. Tables named after your favourite classics

2) Elegant Elitists

Think exclusive guest list, high style. Try marrying or receptioning in an art gallery, museum, or other culturally rich locale. This is probably better for those who prefer an adult-only crowd to help them celebrate and prefer high-end surroundings. Also, getting married at such an elegant venue is also bound to help keep out uninvited onlookers and wedding crashers.

Ideas to Implement It:

  1. Red Carpet Entry
  2. “Celebrity” Photo-Opp Backdrop with photographers
  3. Arrange art such as paintings or sculptures around the venue(s)

3) Patterned Passion

Are you a china-loving fiend like me? Then try that lovely blue and white porcelain pattern you’ve always adored as a guide for your wedding decor and attire. Are you wearing a lovely, vintage gown embellished with elegant detail? Have that same feel emulated in the cake and table linens. Is your love of Marchesa for Lenox patterns so phenomenal that you would base your entire theme on it? Why the heck not? Own your theme and emulate it throughout. Just don’t go overboard.

Ideas to Implement It:

  1. Reflect the pattern in your wedding dress(es)
  2. Reflect the pattern in your wedding cake
  3. Reflect the pattern in your table linens

4) World-Travelers

7) Tree of Life

By a tree. wedding location ideas. I WANT to find a beautiful simple location! Why can't I find a place, like this? This is all I want!!!

Not every bride loves flowers as much as the next gal. Maybe you’re even allergic to flowers! So what do you do if you still want real, live decor at your ceremony and reception? You use foliage: more specifically, trees. Try a venue like a park or garden for the ceremony and reception, outdoor or in a tent. Use rental shrubberies, topiaries, saplings, and more. This could go from looking extremely natural and green (both literally and environmentally) to looking quite elegant if you lean towards the topiaries. And you don’t even need to have real greenery if you don’t want to. You can employ fakes instead and save your budget.

Ideas to Implement It:

  1. Utilize arbors over flowers in decor
  2. Either utilize an existing tree or commandeer a tree rental for your ceremony stage/pulpit
  3. Use small trees as centerpieces

What theme do you plan on utilizing for your big day?
