Chick-fil-A & Same-Sex Marriage: The Fight Rages On

Recently, Chick-fil-A launched an ad that angered many, including the mayor of Boston, Thomas M. Memino. The ad states, “One Man, One Woman. God Luvs Marig. Eat Mor Chikin.”

Boston’s mayor sent a letter to the president of Chick-fil-A, Dan Cathy stating, ‘ “In recent days you said Chick-fil-A opposes same-sex marriage and said the generation that supports it has an ‘arrogant attitude. Now — incredibly — your company says you are backing out of the same-sex marriage debate. I urge you to back out of your plans to locate in Boston.” ‘

It then continues:

“You called supporters of gay marriage ‘prideful.’ Here in Boston, to borrow your own words, we are ‘guilty as charged.’ We are indeed full of pride for our support of same-sex marriage and our work to expand freedom to all people. We are proud that our state and our city have led the way for the country on equal marriage rights…There is no place for discrimination on Boston’s Freedom Trail and no place for your company alongside it.”

The gay rights group L.G.B.T. (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender/Transsexual People) has announced that they are launching a campaign against Chick-fil-A as they petition universities and lawmakers to ban the fast-food restaurant from their campuses. They are also planning a “kiss-in” campaign that will be led by gay and lesbian couples outside of Chick-fil-A Restaurants.

In Chicago, another campaign has been launched by Equality Illinois called “Flick-the-Hate” as they urge people to sign a petition aimed at universities and shopping malls that host Chick-fil-A restaurants. Equality Illinois stated, “As we challenge the company\’s anti-LGBT policies, we must also ask these universities and mall owners why they want to do business with a company that holds up hate as a family value.”

But, there are also Christian responses to everything that has taken place with Chick-fil-A. Billy Graham expressed his support with Chick-fil-A’s stance on same-sex marriage when he stated via a press release:

“I want to express my support for my good friends Truett Cathy and his son Dan Cathy, and for their strong stand for the Christian faith. I’ve known their family for many years and have watched them grow Chick-fil-A into one of the best businesses in America while never compromising their values. Chick-fil-A serves each of its customers with excellence, and treats everyone like a neighbor. It’s easy to see why Chick-fil-A has become so popular across America.

Each generation faces different issues and challenges, but our standard must always be measured by God’s word. I appreciate the Cathy family’s public support for God’s definition of marriage.”
Mike Huckabee has also shown his support for Chick-fil-A by launching a pro-Chick-fil-A campaign. He explained the purpose of his campaign further on his Facebook page and announced that August 1st will now be known as “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day”:

“The goal is simple: Let’s affirm a business that operates on Christian principles and whose executives are willing to take a stand for the Godly values we espouse by simply showing up and eating at Chick Fil-A on Wednesday, August 1. Too often, those on the left make corporate statements to show support for same sex marriage, abortion, or profanity, but if Christians affirm traditional values, we’re considered homophobic, fundamentalists, hate-mongers, and intolerant.”

What do you think of Chick-fil-A’s stance in support of traditional marriage and the backlash they have experienced? Will you continue to eat there?
