Fred Luter, Jr. Historically Elected First Black President of Southern Baptist Convention

Tuesday, June 19, 2012 marked a major milestone in the Southern Baptist Convention’s 167 year history, as they elected Pastor Fred Luter,. Jr. as their first black president. The organization is the largest protestant denomination in the United States.

When asked for comments about the new appointment, Luter replied, “To see that God through his grace and mercy has allowed something like this to happen in my life, and to see it embraced by so many ethnic groups to affirm the vote is a moment I’ll never forget as long as I live,” he said. The vote by 7700 “messengers” from local SBC churches was unanimous!

Luter is married and the father of two children. He is currently the pastor of Franklin Avenue Baptist Church in New Orleans.
